4.1 Hierarchy
Literature states that the hierarchical distinction in organizations will change due to NWW.
Organizations will become ‘flatter’. NWW asks for more task autonomy for employees and there is
less control and direct supervision over their work. Employees themselves decide ‘when’ and ‘where’
they work. Therefore, it is concluded from literature study that hierarchy is likely to decrease
according to the available literature.
Respondents disagree whether hierarchy in the business environment decreases or not.
Some respondents state that hierarchy will get flatter, while others claim the opposite. When
hierarchy even is to decrease, respondents’ opinions vary whether this has to do solely with NWW or
if the societal developments concerning (youth’s) opinions towards hierarchy play a big role in this as
well. Therefore, evidence that hierarchy within the business environment decreases due to NWW is
non-conclusive.
A potential decrease of hierarchy will most likely be less of an issue in the academic
workplace, since academics are claimed to already work according to the NWW principles. Therefore,
most respondents claim there is less hierarchy to begin with inside the academic environment.
However, there will still be hierarchy within the academic environment, caused by the way academic
career paths are developed; there is still a pyramid, with professors, associate professors, assistant
professors, lecturers, and PhDs, increasing in size respectively. In contrast, some respondents have
reported that hierarchy in the academic environment will change due to NWW, which will be visible
in the less hierarchy-based allocation of offices or office layout. Hierarchy thereby becomes less
visible, with as result that people will also behave accordingly. It thus seems that structural or formal
hierarchy (e.g. organizational charts) will not change within the academic environment. However,
cultural or informal hierarchy (e.g. behaviors within the organization) might change, partly due to
societal developments and younger generations entering the work floor.
Although literature is very clear about the decrease of hierarchy, the experts opinions
regarding a potential decrease of hierarchy within both the business and academic environment vary
too much to conclude that hierarchy will actually decrease. Evidence of a potential decrease in
hierarchy within the academic environment due to NWW is therefore non-conclusive. Nevertheless,
there might be changes in (academic) organizations concerning human relationships and behaviors,
which can cause a change in work processes.
