6. Describe a time when you were friendly with someone you dislike or you disliked. 
A while back, when I did my master's degree, there was a classmate who was interested in 
me, but I did not share that interest. So I rejected him politely, but he was still a bit insistent 
and he was still trying to ask me out and it was a very awkward situation, because I didn't 
want to encourage it, of course, but I also didn't want to be rude to a classmate and if there 
is a way to have a normal friendship or at least a normal friendly collegial relationship, that 
would be preferable to tension and awkwardness. I struggled for a long time with finding a 
good balance between being friendly but not too friendly and setting boundaries without 
being rude. One day a bunch of us decided to go out to a nearby bar together just to hang 
out in the group setting. We ended up sitting near each other and he engaged me in some 
conversation and I decided to just be normal relaxed and polite about it and instead of 
being monosyllabic or just giving very basic answers to questions and I also tried to ask 
him something about his life as well. I found out that he has been going through a lot of 
things in his personal life that were difficult for him and he not really in a good headspace 
mentally or emotionally. So I tried to give him some advice and some support to just as a 
friend. Knowing that about him and understanding that might have motivated some of his 
behavior with me helped me be more patient with him and not judge him so harshly. so it's 
good to give people the benefit of the doubt as much as possible, in my opinion. So, now I 
would say we are friends and this awkwardness and tension that was there before. At least 
I don't think it's there anymore. I actually think he's a really good person.

7. Describe a good service you have received. 
 
Since moving to Germany, I would say overall the service tends to be much more bruised. 
Not rude or unfriendly, it definitely is less friendly than what you get in the US. However, I 
have been surprised recently whenever I go to the Mensa to the cafeteria at my university 
that the staff are consistently extremely friendly and helpful. They always greet you and 
they seem genuinely happy to see you they never seen impatient or frustrated about 
something. For example, they always ask me if I want a soup, they never forget to ask that. 
They are very patient with my German because often to order something on the menu I 
have to say a German word that I've probably never said before and it can be a little bit 
awkward, but they are very patient. Sometimes there are problems when paying because 
we have to use our student card to pay but the system is a little bit glitchy and sometimes it 
doesn't work. Whenever that has happened to me they are very patient and they explain 
"This is what you have to do. This is why this problem happens, so you can avoid it in the 
future". While I'm sure they've had to take many other students through that same 
explanation and process they never seem frustrated or angry about having to explain this 
to yet another student. So, I would say it's good service, because they are very friendly 
and they are extremely helpful no matter what the problem or situation is. I think it should 
be like that everywhere. That would be my hope anyway, but it doesn't always.
