12. Waiting for something special 
Describe a time when you waited for something special in your life.

One instance in which I was waiting for something special was when I was waiting to hear 
back from my university of choice regarding whether or not I had been accepted. I had 
worked very hard throughout my academic career in order to have some pretty good 
choices in terms of where I could go. I didn't have a choice of any school, you know, for 
example, I joked that I would get into Stanford when pigs fly. You know, that was never 
going to be an option for me. But I did have the option to go to some fairly prestigious 
schools, so I had one particular that was just my dream school. The city was beautiful. It 
was a different environment from the one in which I had grown up. And the program was 
very exciting. It was something that wasn't offered in a lot of schools, and it would have 
presented a lot of professional opportunities, after having taken a good deal of time to 
prepare the application as best as I could. I then just had to sit and wait, and I sat with all 
of my fingers crossed, and all of my toes crossed anything else anybody could cross in 
hopes that I would hear back soon and that it would be positive news. And it's a very 
particular specific type of anxiety that you feel when you're waiting for something very 
special like this because you know that this news can just absolutely change your life. So, 
it was very difficult to wait, and my family was just as excited as I was, so there was just 
sort of a communal sense of anticipation, which was really exciting ultimately. I did get into 
the school just an incredible moment in my life to open that letter and see what I had been 
waiting to see. So that was a really special moment, and I was thrilled that my family was 
as involved in it emotionally as I was made it even more special. So yes, that was the time 
when I had waited for something special in my life.
