4. Describe an exciting book you have read in your life.
Book that I found especially page-turning impossible to put down was "First they killed my
father" by Loung Ung. She is a Cambodian American woman who was born in Cambodia.
She survived the Camarouge regime. Eventually, she was able to come to the United
States and receiving an education. The book describes her memories as a young child
when the Camarouge took over Phnom Penh and made everyone evacuate the city. It
details her experiences in the work camps watching her sister die, her father was
essentially disappeared. He was taken by some other Camarouge and they never saw him
again. But they assume he was murdered. Her mother and her youngest sister died of
starvation. You want to find out how Loung survived and not just survived in a physical
sense but also emotionally and psychologically. There's just something about seeing the
Camarrouge through The eyes of a child that really highlights their depravity and the
senselessness of the violence and the genocide that they committed in just four years. For
me, because my parents adopted my brother from Cambodia, this also feels a bit personal
to me. So, I felt a bit of astrong connection to her and I wanted to understand better what
Cambodia has been through and what the people there have had to go through. It was
really compelling book that was difficult for me to put down while I was reading it. It felt way
too short.
5. Describe a cafe you would like to visit or that you like to visit.
Many years ago, when I still lived in North Carolina, there was a cafe in Durham, that I
forget the name of it now, but I remember it very fondly, because I would go there with my
colleagues or even by myself before or after a gig. They had really good coffee they even
had a beverages that combined alcohol and coffee which was really fun for me when I was
of legal drinking age. But I remember they also had really delicious food options I
remember going there and eating a brunch or a breakfast. They had some really delicious
breakfast meals like eggs and hash browns and sausage and coffee orange juice, all of
that. I also remember going there for dinner. I remember going on a date there once and it
was really nice. The overall environment was very stylish they had a different kinds of
tables and seeing arrangements. Sometimes, they had live music, they had art walls, the
staff was really friendly. It was just a really great place and it was in a really good location
in the downtown area. So, you were close to a lot of theaters and things like that. So, you
could easily stop there, get some food and then go on and enjoy the rest of your evening
somewhere else nearby. It was a really fun place that I occasionally remember and think
about fondly. I wish I could go back to from time to time.
