Teaching pronunciation
Difficulties in teaching pronunciation: sounds, stress and intonation
Pronunciation involves far more than individual sounds. W ord stress, sentence stress, 
intonation, and word linking all influence the sound o f spoken English, not to mention the way 
w'e often slur w ords and phrases together in casual speech. 'What are you going to do?' becomes 
W haddaya gonna do?' English pronunciation involves too many com plexities for learners to 
strive for a com plete elim ination o f accent, but improving pronunciation will boost self esteem, 
facilitate com m unication, and possibly lead to a better job or a least m ore respect in the 
workplace. Effective com m unication is o f greatest importance, so choose first to work on 
problems that significantly hinder communication and let the rest go. Rem em ber that your 
students also need to learn strategies for dealing with m isunderstandings, since native 
pronunciation is for m ost an unrealistic goal.
