Total-physical response
Total physical response (TPR) 
is a language teaching method developed by James Asher, a 
professor emeritus o f psychology at San Jose State University. It is based on the coordination of 
language and physical movement. In TPR, instructors give commands to students in the target 
language with body movements, and students respond with whole-body actions.
The method is an example o f the comprehension approach to language teaching. The listening 
and responding (with actions) serves two purposes: It is a means o f quickly recognizing meaning 
in the language being learned, and a means o f passively learning the structure o f the language 
itself. Grammar is not taught explicitly but can be learned from the language input. TPR is a 
valuable way to learn vocabulary, especially idiomatic terms, e.g., phrasal verbs.

The 
C om petency-B ased 
training m ethod was developed prim arily for Industry. The training 
was based on w hat people were expected to do in the workplace. It em phasized what people 
could actually do as a result o f their training rather than sim ply looking at the am ount o f training 
that the em ployees attended.This method allowed trainers to match the training with required job 
com petencies thereby m aking the training totally relevant to the needs o f the em ployee.This in 
turn increased the m otivation o f the trainees because they could see the direct relevance o f what 
they were studying. It also kept the trainees task oriented and active. Last but not least, it made 
the assessm ent process easier because the outcom es required w ere clearly stated in the 
com petency standards.
