then, without opening his eyes or moving his head, Pratt lowered the glass to his mouth 
and tipped in almost half the contents. He paused, his mouth full of wine, getting the 
first taste; then he permitted some of it to tickle down his throat…he held the breath, 
blew it out his nose, and finally began to roll the wine around under the tongue, and 
chewed it, actually chewed it with his teeth as though it were bread. It was a solemn, 
impressive performance, and I must say he did it well.” [Dahl, 1991: 448-449]. 
Напряженность процесса дегустации вина передает ряд глаголов в Past 
Simple: lifted, lowered, tipped, paused, permitted, held, blew out, began to roll, 
chewed, тем самым эксплицируя смысл слова “performance”и рисуя в 
воображении читателя некий спектакль. Употребление прилагательные solemn 
(involving serious attitude [MED:1360]) и impressive – very good [MED: 720] 
придаёт описанию дегустации торжественную тональность и рисует атмосферу 
загадочности. При этом, автор использует глагол to chew – to use your teeth to bite 
food in your mouth into small pieces so that you can swallow it [MED:233]. 
Дегустатор пробует вино, отпивая и смакуя каждый его маленький глоток, будто 
прожёвывая его, хотя всем известно, что вино не жуют.

Cитуация еще более обостряется, когда Ричард Пратт все же угадывает 
сорт и марку вина, и по реакции Майка можно догадаться, что дегустатор 
выиграл пари. Автор мастерски описывает манеру Пратта как бы невзначай, 
между делом угадывать сорт и год вина. Соположение в одном контексте 
глаголов, описывающих ряд последовательных действий – to sip, to hold up, to 
turn, to smile, a также эпитеты slow – a slow movement or action [MED;1347], silky
- very soft, smooth or shiny [MED: 1330], словно намекают читателю на то, что 
этот человек что-то задумал: 
‘Now, let me see – where were we?’ he said. ‘Ah, yes. This wine is from 
Bordeaux, from the commune of St Julien in the district of Medoc… What are the 
fourth-growth vineyards in the commune of St Julien?... For the last time he sipped the 
wine. Then, still holding the glass up near his mouth, he turned to Mike and he smiled, 
a slow, silky smile, and he said, ‘You know what this is? This is the little Chateau 
Branaire-Ducru.’ 
Mike sat still, not moving. 
‘And the year, 1934.’ 
We all looked at Mike, waiting for him to turn the bottle around in its basket and 
show the label. 
“Just a minute,’ Mike said. ‘Wait just a minute’. He was sitting very quiet, 
bewildered-looking, and his face was becoming puffy and pale, as though all the force 
was draining slowly out of him” [Dahl, 1991: 450 – 451]. 
Прилагательные quiet – making very little or no noise [MED:1156], 
bewildered-looking – confused and not certain what to do [MED: 120], puffy – slightly 
swollen [MED: 1140], pale – to have skin lighter than usual because you are ill, 
shocked or worried [MED:1022] рисуют нам портрет бедного, загнанного в тупик 
Майка, которому словно не хватает воздуха, и кажется, что силы вдруг покинули 
его. Майк проиграл пари и ему ничего не остается, как уступить. 
Кульминация, по нашему мнению, наступает тогда, когда служанка, 
незаметно появившись за спиной Пратта, неожиданно передает дегустатору его 
очки, которые он забыл перед ужином в кабинете Майка:
