Listening activity
Students listen to audio clips that recount a day in the life of a rich child and a poor child in Victorian London.


Main activity

Students read about The Poor Law and discuss the comprehension questions with their partner after each section.
Writing summary
Students use the sentence stems to write a paragraph summarising what life was like for people who couldn’t work in Victorian London. Students check their writing for accuracy.
Comprehension
Read the comprehension text about Victorian workhouses. Students to complete comprehension questions. Make links to the video about the types of work the people would be completing there.
Mastery assessment plenary
Students to complete mastery quiz. Address misconceptions.

As in the brief, the lessons follow a specific structure of 3 exercises leading up to an extended writing piece.



  • All lessons have support boxes in read to recap grammar rules for the main task (or a reminder from the previous lesson)

  • All lessons provide students with answers for self/peer assessment after each task

  • Images are used as a stimulus for the extended writing task - higher ability students are given creative extension tasks that require the grammar rule to to put into practice with an appropriate sentence stem
