Overview:
X 3 lessons a week: Students study the abridged version of Oliver Twist (accompanied by original extracts for key scenes), focusing on context of Victorian London, Dickens’ own childhood, plot, character development of analysis of themes explored in the text. The lessons are reading/content heavy, which allows teachers to teak and adapt lessons as they teach the unit. Given there are 7 weeks in each term, there is ample content in the lessons for teachers to seamlessly add a starter/plenary to ensure continuity throughout the unit. Hence, some teachers may appear to be ‘behind’ in the teaching of the text but are in fact following the SOL as instructed as different classes move at different paces.
