ignored) Derek’s concerns and he didn’t address Mike’s negativity until Inez forced him to.

because of their friendship. However, he did finally talk straight to Mike.

2. How effective are Russell’s communication skills? Provide evidence to support your answer.
Russell didn’t exhibit the most important aspect of communication—listening, especially 
when he met with his team. He didn’t ask questions or seek to ensure understanding. He did, 
however, speak plainly, which is an important aspect of effective communication.
3. How closely did Russell follow the guidelines for delegating effectively?
While Russell chose a worthwhile goal to delegate (improve response time), he didn’t do a 
good job of handing off the task. The goal was clear, but he didn’t establish how he would 
measure success or what resources Jackie had to help her accomplish the goal. He also didn’t 
get her full commitment. He appeared to give her complete autonomy, but he didn’t 
specifically share his thinking.
