Symptoms of Mismanaging “Fires”
Many supervisors feel like they spend their days “putting out fires”—dealing with those 
interruptions that you hadn’t planned on and that consume big chunks of your day. They all seem 
critical at the time and don’t feel like they can be ignored. Here are some signs that you’re not 
dealing with “fires” effectively.

Trying to control the uncontrollable. 
Instead, deal with reality.
o
Example: Your unit faces unexpectedly high IT service expenses. 
Rather than trying to find questionable ways to avoid paying the 
bill, focus on ways to increase profitability in other ways. Then, 
look at ways to reduce future IT expenses.

Feeling like a victim. 
Instead, take responsibility. Be proactive and 
find one thing you can do to improve the situation. Take it one step 
further and ask, “What is the hidden opportunity in this situation?”
o
Example: Blaming programmers for the IT bill. The hidden 
opportunity might be finding new ways to save money or increase 
profitability.

Blaming yourself for every problem. 
This is the opposite of feeling like a victim. Use the same 
approach of being proactive in responding to the situation without beating yourself up over it.

Example: Instead of worrying about getting fired over the unexpected costs, use the 
strategies suggested and find ways to save money or increase profitability in other areas.
