Sociolinguistic competences 
give us an opportunity to learn a competence on greetings, addressing, 
dialect, accent, register, positive and negative politeness, idioms and etc. During the communication with native 
speakers of target language socio-linguistic competences are significant. They are not less important than others. 
These competences help us to learn delicateness of usage the target language.
There are many helpful materials in order to learn socio-linguistic competences. But one of the most 
beneficial one is authentic materials and they are as essential as in socio-linguistic competences as in other 
aspects. For example, when native speakers use the same idioms in different context, we should understand the 
distinguishing mark of the idiom. Because the same idiom can gives different even opposite meanings in several 
situations and etc. 
 
Example: “Death, thou shalt die” 
[6]. This statement uses 
“death”
in two opposing ways. We clearly 
know the death is not a living thing and cannot die. But Donne is shoving mortality in this paradox.
Pragmatic competences
as advising, persuading, urging, socialing, interaction pattern are also unique 
part of particular qualities of intercultural communicative competence. In 
Acquisition in Interlanguage 
Pragmatics 
(2003), linguist Anne Barron offers this more expansive definition: "pragmatic competence . . . is 
understood as the knowledge of the linguistic resources available in a given language for realizing particular 
illocutions, knowledge of the sequential aspects of speech acts, and finally, knowledge of the appropriate 
contextual use of the particular language’s linguistic resources."[7] 
The term 
pragmatic competence 
was introduced by sociolinguist Jenny Thomas in 1983 in the article 
"Cross-Cultural Pragmatic Failure" (
Applied Linguistics
). In that article, she defined 
pragmatic competence
as 
"the ability to use language effectively in order to achieve a specific purpose and to understand a language in 
context." [8] 
There was significant statement by Chomsky: “language is used purposefully; indeed, in later writings,
