Ferghana Valley

Shamshad Abdullaev (Uzbekistan), a native of Ferghana City, is a founder and 
leader of the Ferghana School of Russian poetry. He is the author of several collec-
tions of poems. In 1994 he received the coveted Andrei Bely Prize for poetry and 
in 1998 his work was featured in the journal Znamia. He has been a distinguished 
guest at many Western cultural institutions and his work has appeared in many 
languages.
Abdulkhamid Anarbaev (Uzbekistan) holds a Ph.D. in archeology and is the head 
of the Archeology Department at the Institute of Archeology in Samarkand. He is 
the author of more than ninety publications in Uzbek and Russian.
Khaydarbek Bababekov (Uzbekistan), Ph.D., is a professor of history at Tash-
kent State Pedagogical University. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal History 
of Turan,
published in Russian and Uzbek. He is also the author of more than 30 
monographs and 300 articles. His main research interest has been the history of 
the Kokand Khanate.

Bakhtiyar Babadjanov (Uzbekistan) holds a Ph.D. in religion. He is a senior 
research fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Uzbekistan Academy 
of Sciences. His research interests include the history of Sufi brotherhoods in 
Mawarannahr, the political activities of Sufi leaders, the interactions between 
Sufism and politics, and the Soviet (and post-Soviet) re-Islamization in Central 
Asia. He is the author of more than 100 publications in Russian, Uzbek, English, 
French, and German. He is also the coauthor of Schaibanidische Grabinschriften 
(1997) and Les inscription persanes de Char Bakr, necropole familiale des khwaja 
Juybary pres de Boukhara
(2002).
