S. Frederick Starr (USA) is founding chairman of the Central Asia–Caucasus 
Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in 
Washington, DC. He is currently writing a book on the “Golden Age” of Central 
Asia. Trained as an archeologist, classicist, and historian, he earlier served as found-
ing director of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies, and president

of Oberlin College. He has published numerous books and articles on political and 
cultural history, architecture, and music.
Authors and Contributing Authors
Sergey Abashin (Russia) holds a Ph.D. in history from Moscow State University. 
He has worked as a lead scholar at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology 
at the Russian Academy of Sciences, specializing in history and anthropology of 
Central Asia. He is the author of Nationalisms in Central Asia: The Search for 
Identity 
(2007).
Kamoludin Abdullaev (Tajikistan) is an independent historian from Dushanbe, 
Tajikistan. A two-time Fulbright Scholar, Abdullaev is among the most active 
Central Asian participants of the U.S. government-sponsored research exchange 
programs in the field of history and political science. From 2001 to 2010, he regu-
larly taught modern Central Asian subjects at Yale University and at Ohio State 
University. His most recent publications include Ot Sintsiana do Khorasana. Iz 
istoriii Sredneaziatskoi emigratsii XX veka
(From Xinjiang to Khurasan. From 
the History of the Twentieth-Century Central Asian Emigration; 2009) and with 
Shahram Akbarzadeh, Historical Dictionary of Tajikistan (2010).
Ravshan Abdullaev (Uzbekistan), Ph.D., is a senior research fellow at the Depart-
ment of History of the Colonial Period at the Institute of History of the Uzbekistan 
Academy of Sciences. He has published more than forty works on national issues 
and political movements in Central Asia in the twentieth century.
