Chronology of the Tragedy in Andijan

. on the night of May 13, 2005, armed militants from 
Akromiya attacked a police sub-station and military units, killing several officers 
and soldiers and seizing more than 250 firearms, as well as grenades, vehicles, 
and other materiel.

A few hours later, the now well-armed Akromiya band attacked the prison and 
freed more than 500 prisoners, whom the militants forced to take up arms and 
join them. Around 5:00

., the enlarged group launched a two-hour siege of the 
Andijan headquarters of the National Security Service (SNB), killing or injuring 
several officers and soldiers. Around 6:00

. the Akromists set fire to the city’s 
main theater and cinema, which stand opposite to the Andijan City Hall on Babur 
Square. The Akromists meanwhile used all types of maneuvers, including the fires, 
to lure large numbers of spectators, including many women, to the square, where 
they were joined by still more armed militants.
But although they had “lit a match,” no blaze followed. When this outcome be-
came clear, almost all the Akromiya militants who were inside the City Hall or on 
the square poured out through the crowd, some of them running through yards and 
throwing down their weapons. Within a couple of hours they had crossed the border 
with Kyrgyzstan and entered refugee camps there. Most of the fighters (especially the 
combat team leader T. Khodjiev) declared that they had had no weapons. However, 
Akromiya itself had filmed its own actions with video cameras, and their films all 
confirmed that the attackers had been heavily armed. When this information was 
passed to the Kyrgyz prosecutor general and reviewed by his staff, the Kyrgyz sent 
the accused back across the border to law-enforcement offices in Uzbekistan.
Akromiya’s own videotapes of the events in Andijan ended up in the hands of 
Uzbek law enforcement bodies and became a key argument for the prosecution.

Akromiya’s eager video cameramen had not only filmed the militants’ actions in 
Andijan, but also some of their meetings. One long sequence shows the burning 
of the movie and drama theaters. During the scene, the photographer himself was

distinctly heard exclaiming, “It’s great, awesome! . . . Now everyone will come” 
(Zo’r bolayapti, a, dahshat! . . . Ana endi hamma [odamlar) kelishadi!]. As noted, 
the goal was to assemble a crowd, including relatives, friends, and fellow mem-
bers of Akromiya. Using landlines from the City Hall and cell phones, they called 
everyone they knew.
One of the videos includes the following snippet from a cell phone conversation: 
“Come, come here . . . here, everyone here! Even if someone doesn’t have courage, 
bring him here anyway . . . Our women are already here” (Kelinglar, kelinglar, 
mana bu yoqqa . . . hamma shu erda! . . . Duhi bolmasayam olib kel! . . . Ayol-
larimiz shu erda turibti
). Later, a frustrated Akromiya member says, “The crowd 
is not gathering, that’s why we have to shout ‘Allahu Akbar’” (Talpa bo’lmayapti, 
ashinchin “Allahu Akbar” diysh kerak
).

The videos include scenes of activists, 
especially women, being pushed onto the square. There an Akromiya member lines 
them up and commands them to wave their hands and shout “Allahu Akbar,” so as 
to draw others to the spot. On a second film (21st minute) an Akromiya organizer 
admonishes the women, “Don’t be afraid! Line up in a row . . . If you’re killed,
