Listening

Developing abilities and skills in receiving and understanding teacher talk, interlocutors in a dialogue; short simple announcements; understanding of the main idea of simple discourse – fairy tales, stories (scaffolding the comprehension with illustrations, guessing) and authentic audio/video materials on familiar topics, related to different communicative settings based on the topics defined for each grade of the given level provided the recordings are played for more than once.



Speaking



Spoken Interaction (Dialogue). Developing skills and abilities of taking part in: a dialogue of everyday life matters, as well as in connection with the read or listened children folklore texts: a dialogue related to etiquette (greeting, getting to know, introduction, saying good-bye politely, congratulation and thanking for congratulation, apology; dialogue – interrogation (ability to ask "who?", "what?", "when?", "where?", "where to?"); a dialogue – encouraging for action (requests, agreeing/disagreeing to requests) in various communication settings based on the topics defined for each grade of the beginner level.
Monologue. Developing skills and abilities: following basic speech etiquette norms, accepted in the target community; producing short, simple monologues: announcements and descriptions relying on pictures in the framework of the communicative settings based on the topics defined for each grade of the beginner level.



Reading

In Grade 1 Reading is not taught. Grades 2-4. Developing abilities and skills in the framework of communicative settings based on the content defined for each grade of beginner level: use of reading rules and orthography while reading “aloud” short texts, containing not only learnt language material; «reading techniques» (correct stressing in words and phrases, appropriate intonation); reading «silently» and understanding short texts containing only learnt language material, as well as simple texts, containing certain new words, the meaning of which can be inferred by guessing or probable prognosis; reading for specific information (name of the main character, location); use of bilingual dictionary of a textbook.
