In the Middle Ages, socio-political advertising served as a tool in shaping
and managing public opinion. To do this, they used heralds, who uttered political
appeals while reporting on government orders. At that time, their work was prestigious
and very lucrative. The fact that the majority of the population is illiterate has further
increased the need for publishers. At times, ugly details of the rivals' private lives were
exposed through the calls of the heralds, exposing their excessive ambition and moral
impurity. The important point is that these methods are
very similar to the modern
methods of political struggle, which are called "black technologies".Even today, social
advertisements with political goals are sometimes given for completely different
purposes.
In the new era, there was a technical revolution in the field of mass
communication. After the invention of the printing press
by Johann Guttenberg in
1440, it became possible to distribute socio-political advertising first in the form of
leaflets and then in newspapers. This discovery paved the way for the mass
dissemination of information. As a result, "the time required to create a single copy of
the
manuscript was saved, and now advertising has become a mass product."30. It is
noteworthy that the traditional forms of print advertising of that time are still widely
used today in a slightly modernized form.
In a democratic society, every citizen has the right to full and comprehensive
information about the activities
of a particular politician, party or government
agency.Politicians, in turn, have the right to use a variety of methods, including self
promotion, to fight for the votes of the electorate, to convince people of their ideas, to
increase their supporters, to persuade them to vote for themselves. For politicians, such
advertising is manifested in the continuous provision of positive
information about
their activities and serves to create an acceptable image for themselves, to form a
positive public opinion.
