Paper making and paper product industry
As an important part of light industry, paper making and paper product industry produced a total industrial output value of 8.16% of light industry in 2008. China's paper making and paper product industry includes pulp manufacturing, paper making and paper product manufacturing. Although the national government issued a series of encouragement and burden-reduction policies, paper making industry witnessed a sharp drop of foreign and domestic demand and encountered the worst year in 2008 since the foundation of China. The production capacity surplus was a foregone conclusion in 2008. As a capital-intensive industry, China's paper making industry had carried out technology updates all through the industry since 2002. Typically, several leading listed companies utilized capital advantage and deployed facilities of high speed, wide paper pieces and large production. There were as many as 7 enterprises of annual output over a million tons in 2006. The productivity expanded abruptly but the demand didn't follow up. The profitability of paper industry will continue to decline in 2009 and becomes stable at latest in 2010. For the short-run, the most pessimistic situations might happen in the first two quarters of 2009. The industry is expected to revive at latest in 2010.
During 2004 to 2008, the number of paper making and paper product enterprises increased from 7,743 to 8,715. The asset size increased from 414.7 billion yuan to 698.3 billion yuan. The total industrial output value and industrial sales value increased to 337.2 billion yuan and 321.8 billion yuan in 2004 to 700.6 billion yuan and 664.7 billion yuan in November 2008. The contribution margin increased from 15.4 billion yuan to 35.6 billion yuan. The number of employees increased from 130,000 to 141,000.

Furniture Manufacturing Industry
As an important part of light industry, furniture manufacturing industry generated a proportion of 3.12% of light industry output in 2008. It includes wood furniture manufacturing, bamboo and cane furniture manufacturing, metal furniture manufacturing, plastic furniture manufacturing and other furniture manufacturing.
During the 30 years since reform and open-up, China's furniture industry has rapidly transferred its mode of production from handicraft to mechanization, automation and industrialization and moved towards mature industrialization and new industrialization to become a modern industry.
In recent years, the total output value of China's furniture industry grew very rapidly, but the improvement is mainly reflected in output, not the overall technological level nor the quality of the entire industry output growth. With the largest total export volume all over the world, China has become a major furniture producer and exporter. China's furniture industry has much room for development along with the industry center moving from developed countries to developing countries and the increasing international market demand.
The number of furniture manufacturing enterprises increased from 3,025 in 2004 to 4,432 in the first 11 months of 2008. During the same period, the asset size increased from 90.1 billion yuan to 173.0 billion yuan. The industrial total output value increased from 115.5 billion yuan to 262.8 billion yuan. The industrial sales value increased from 113.1 billion yuan to 253.5 billion yuan. The contribution margin increased from 4.9 billion yuan to 9.2 billion yuan. The employees in this industry increased from 65,000 to 92,000. China's furniture manufacturing industry has seen a great leap in scale and technology level during the five years.
