12. Only Connect
We often develop wounds from relationships, but we also heal in relationship to
each  other.  When  we  are  in  healthy  interactions  and  supportive  relationships,
when  we  feel  “tended  and  befriended,”  our  bodies  and  brains  have  a  better
chance of healing, too. For  instance,  having  strong  social  ties  helps  to  improve
outcomes  for  women  with  breast  cancer,  multiple  sclerosis,  and  other  diseases.
In part, that’s because positive, supportive interactions help us to produce more
oxytocin,  a  “feel-good”  hormone  that  helps  to  mediate  and  dial  down  the
overactive inflammatory stress response.
It’s important to know that you are not alone in your feelings of loss, shame,
guilt, anxiety, or grief. When you reach out to others who understand the fallout
from  Post  Childhood  Adversity  Syndrome,  you  gain  not  only  support  but  life
perspective. You see that your own story is one of many stories that make up the
larger hurt of humanity.
And when you begin to understand that your pain is not just your pain, but is
shared by so many others—at least 64 percent of the people around you carry a
history  of  adversity  that  may  affect  their  adult  health—you  can  begin  to  share
support and ideas for healing. You can find ways to start right where you are, no
matter where you find yourself now.
That might mean joining a community mindfulness meditation group, MBSR
class,  or  reaching  out  to  friends  with  whom  you  enjoy  healthy,  caring
relationships,  and  who  are  willing  to  share  their  own  stories  and  resources  that
they’ve found to be helpful. It may mean passing along the Adverse Childhood
Experiences  questionnaire,  or  even  this  book,  to  family  members,  friends,  or
coworkers whom you feel would be helped by it, and using it as a way to jump-
start a deeper, more honest conversation.

Seeking Professional Help to Heal from Post Childhood Adversity
Syndrome
Sometimes,  you  cannot  heal  on  your  own,  despite  your  best  efforts.  You  need
the help of a well-trained professional.
