1.2-§. The classifications of lexicons in English and Uzbek languages

The problem of recording and recalling the content of these discoveries is not trivial. Linguistic research into the English language has yielded and will continue to yield many discoveries about the language, and the problem of recording and recalling the content of these discoveries is not trivial. A system is needed to arrange the information that has been gathered so that it may be retrieved quickly when needed; such a system is realized as a lexicon. Fillmore has defined a lexicon as follows: I conceive of a lexicon a list of minimally redundant descriptions of the syntactic, semantic and phonological properties of lexical items, accompanied by the system of redundancy rules, the latter conceivable as a set of instructions on how to interpret the lexical entries.

The steps in the construction of a lexicon may be detailed as follows:

deciding which words to enter, i.e., the lexical stock;

deciding what are the subsets of the lexical stock;

deciding what information to code about each subset;

compiling the information;

structuring the storage of the information

where the steps outlined have interdependencies. We shall discuss each of the steps, especially in relation to the English language.

The Lexical Stock
An English lexicon should comprise, in theory, all of the words in the Russian language, but this is a set whose contents are not universally agreed upon, because certain terms are gradually phased out of use while others are constantly being generated and added to the lexical stock. The words for the lexicon might come from existing sources, such as dictionaries and technical dictionaries, and could be supplemented with neologisms found in published works. The lexicographer must also be on the lookout for new connotations and settings for 'ancient' words.
