James Joyce is one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. However, his novel "Ulysses" is not studied in literature classes at school. Extremely simple and his hero, and the plot: one day in the life of a Dublin man in the street. The novel is indeed unusual and difficult to read, and therefore aroused the desire to get to know him more deeply. According to the generally accepted opinion, the entire cosmos of literature is contained in this work - a firework of all styles and techniques of writing, a virtuoso language, echoes with myriads of great and unknown texts, invasions of ancient myths and the creation of new ones, irony and scandal, mockery and play - and rising from all this a new look at art, man and the world. From the moment it was published to this day, Ulysses has remained a challenge from the Writer to the Reader.
Thus, the purpose of this study was formed: to find out why the novel "Ulysses" is called a modernist encyclopedia.
To achieve this goal, it was necessary to solve the following tasks:
1. Find out what modernism was in the art of the 20th century.
2. Study literary works that deal with James Joyce's novel Ulysses.
3. Find modernist techniques in the novel.
4. Get acquainted with the biography of the writer and determine what moments in his life influenced the writing of the novel "Ulysses".
5. Draw conclusions about how innovative artistic techniques appeared in the novel "Ulysses".
