Famous artists of Uzbekistan and their paintings

Pavel Benkov (1879-1949)

He came to Uzbekistan in 1928 and stayed here for the rest of his life. Before that, he studied under Kustodiev, then in Paris, defended his diploma painting in Italy. The works show the classical European Italian school of painting. In the 1930s, he lived in Khiva, where he painted the painting " Khiva Girl "(1933), called the pearl of his work.

At that time, a group of avant-garde artists was formed in Samarkand, creating a new art that combines post-impressionism, avant-gardism and oriental flavor, but the creative community broke up due to party pressure. Artists began to make custom large canvases in the style of social realism, glorifying industrialization and the man of labor.
Alexander Volkov (1886-1957)

Alexander Nikolaevich Volkov was born in Ferghana. He studied in St. Petersburg at the Higher Art School at the Academy of Fine Arts (Makovsky's class) and worked in the workshop where N. K. Roerich taught. He continued his studies at the Kiev Art School (1912-1916) under Krichevsky. He admired the mosaics of the Church of St. Sophia of Kiev and the paintings of Vrubel in the Church of St. Cyril. Under their influence, he created his first works "Mazars under the moon" (1915), "In the Mountains" (1917).

The founders of Russian avant-garde Kandinsky and Malevich also influenced the formation of the artist's style.

Volkov managed to do something incredible – he combined the canonical Rublev Trinity, Russian avant-gardism and Oriental miniature in one canvas. The painting "Pomegranate Teahouse" (1924) is the pinnacle of Alexander Volkov's work.

He was buried in the Botkin cemetery in Samarkand.

Usto Mumin (1897-1957)

Alexander Vladimirovich Nikolaev entered the history of painting under the pseudonym Usto-Mumin. He studied in Moscow, in the State Free Art Workshops of Malevich, studied the works of Italian artists of the XV-XVI centuries

. Perugino, Botticelli, Giorgione and the Central Asian miniature, which influenced his work. The portrait of the "Teahouse owner" caused a great response, and not only because of the rose flower adorning the man. Mumin depicted a rose flower on many of his canvases. At the 1924 exhibition in Samarkand, the paintings "Spring" and "Bridegroom" were also presented, and they were immediately positively received by the audience. The paintings "The Boy with the quail", "Friendship, love, eternity", "When I saw Samarkand", "Dutarist" and others are admired. Critics called them the " Uzbek Renaissance." He was buried in the Botkin cemetery in Samarkand.
