Nikolay Karakhan (1900-1970)

As a child, Karakhan moved to Turkestan from Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan today) with his parents. While still at school, he became addicted to painting, which led him to the Tashkent School of Art (1918-1921). In 1921, he was drafted into the Red Army, where he painted a significant part of his paintings. After demobilization, Karakhan taught painting first at the Turkmen Professional pedagogical college (1925-1934), then at the Tashkent School of Art (1934-1941). Many of his paintings and sketches represent a somewhat unusual chronicle of the young artist's development in Uzbekistan. Bright stylized images, rhythmic compositions and decorative elements are the distinguishing features of Karakhan's early works.

Nadezhda Kashina (1896-1977)

Kashina was born in Perm (Russia), in a family of artists engaged in wall iconography. She studied at the Perm State School of Arts (1920) under the direction of A. Kaplan, then in Moscow at VKHUTEMAS (Higher Art and Technical Workshops) - VKHUTEIN (Higher Art and Technical Institute) (1921-1927) under the direction of Falk and Gerasimov. She was a founding member of the Rost Art Association (1928-1929) and a member of Gruppa-13 (1929). Kashina began exhibiting her work in 1928, at solo exhibitions in Tashkent (1957, 1973), Moscow (1971) and Perm (1973). From 1930, she lived in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), and then in Tashkent (1932). Kashina conveyed in her works her passion for expressionism with the bright colors of Uzbekistan.
