A. Study the number of phonemes in English.

The number of variations in the field of one speech sound increases continually depending on the positional or combinatory changes of phoneme variants. And this condition gives the evidence that there is no limit in the number of sounds in a language. As to phonemes which those limitless sounds in a language are based on, their number is limited. Professor A. Abduazizov said the following on this statement: “Limitless sounds in a language unite limited phonemes on the basis of generality. For instance, 6 vowel and 25 consonant phonemes in Uzbek are the general representatives of limitless sounds in a language” [1, 13]. Among the allophones of a phoneme, the one which is excluded from positional and combinatory changes is regarded as the main variant of a phoneme. By taking into consideration the main variants of phonemes, the number of phonemes in a language is defined. For instance, 20 vowel and 24 consonant phonemes in English are considered the main variants of those phonemes.
