Words with Primary and Secondary Stress

Most words of more than four syllables have two stresses: primary and secondary. In most words the secondary stress falls on the syllable separated from the primary stress by one unstressed syllable.

e.g.: pronunciation, occupation, recognition, academician, governmental, patriotic, etc.

In many cases the position of the secondary stress is often that of the primary stress in the original word.

In many derivative nouns the secondary stress falls on the same syllable which has the primary stress in the original word. In such nouns the syllable with the secondary stress may be separated from the primary stress by two or even three unstressed syllables.

e.g.: organize - organization, experiment - experimentation, peculiar - peculiarity

If the original (NON-derivative) word has both a primary and a secon- dary stress, the secondary stress in the derivative word remains on the same syllable, while the primary stress changes its place and falls on the syllable immediately preceding the suffix.

e.g.: recommend – recommendation, represent – representation

Words with Two Primary Stresses

The following groups of words have two primary stresses:

Polysyllabic words with separable prefixes having a distinct meaning of their own.

These prefixes are as follows:

Negative prefixes: un-, dis-, non-, in-, il-, im-, ir-.

e.g.: 'un'known, 'disap'pear, 'ir'regular, 'inar'tistic, 'ille'gitimate, 'non- 'final
