Box 3.2: International Universities in Uzbekistan
The number of international universities in Uzbekistan is growing. These 
universities do not receive state funding and enroll about 7% of the total 
undergraduate student intake and 10% of all higher education students. Classes 
in the international schools are taught exclusively in English or Russian, and entry 
requirements and all degrees meet international standards. At present, there are 
seven international universities in Uzbekistan, all in Tashkent. 
Westminster International University in Tashkent
was the first international 
university with English as a language of instruction. It was established in 2002 in 
partnership with the University of Westminster (London, United Kingdom) and 
the “Umid” Foundation
a
of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In its first 
year, 120 students were enrolled; and it currently serves close to 3,000 students. 
The university offers undergraduate courses in business administration, economics 
(economics with finance), business information systems, and commercial law; and 
postgraduate courses: master of arts in international business and management, 
master of law in international commercial law, and a university certificate in special 
study. In 2016, the university enrolled 14 international students, from Afghanistan, 
the People’s Republic of China, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, the 
Kyrgyz Republic, and Pakistan.
The Management Development Institute of Singapore in Tashkent
was 
established in 2007 in partnership with the Management Development Institute 
of Singapore. Currently, more than 2,200 students are enrolled in undergraduate 
courses such as international hospitality and tourism management; accounting; 
banking and finance; industrial management; and business and economics 
(management, financial management, and marketing management). The institute 
is Tashkent’s only school that offers a master of business administration (MBA) 
degree with specialization in finance, marketing, hospitality management, supply 
chain management, and human resource management.
