In sustainability reporting, as in other environmental management methods, the focus has been on 
tracking and quantifying trends and/or predicting future impacts. It has been suggested that it might 
be more useful if reporting showed progress towards identifying and addressing the opportunity costs

of poor design and the costs of inaction. Ironically, while the assessment, auditing and reporting 
methods examined in this section involve prediction (or, more accurately, projections of trends), 
they are still essentially ‘retrospective’ in orientation. They are focused primarily on measuring 
and reporting negative impacts of given operations in complex open systems. They also focus on 
promulgating ‘best practice’, rather than social transformation. In effect, we have concentrated on 
tracking changes in the resilience and capacity of nature, rather than the eco-effectiveness of human-
designed systems and their management. We need to re-direct more efforts towards analysing the 
systems design failures that could be addressed through innovation and design. In the next section, 
we will look at innovation, planning and implementation strategies that might enable us to create a 
more sustainable future. The approaches to be examined are futures thinking tools, trading systems 
and bioregional planning. They have little directly in common, except for their apparent 
future
orientation and the fact that they are not concerned primarily with quantifying the unquantifiable, 
but instead with implementing change. However, the question is whether they can help us design 
better futures, or simply prepare for futures that have been pre-determined by our institutions, ideas 
and tools.
