Glossary
Green space frames
are indoor/outdoor structures created in spaces between buildings, on roofs, in 
parks, etc that are designed to support plants and habitats for indigenous species, while adding value 
to human activities (eg urban food production or recreation). 
Green space walls
are walls that become ecosystems in themselves and provide eco-services (like 
Green Scaffolding) as well as social and working spaces. That is, they provide biodiversity support 
through terrariums, aquaponic systems and microhabitats for indigenous species, etc.
Heat island effect
is where tightly sealed surfaces in urban areas, such as asphalt and concrete, soak 
up the heat and re-radiate it back into the atmosphere as thermal infrared radiation. The heat forms 
a dome of higher temperatures over cities, which are often hotter than nearby areas.
Hydrogen economy
refers to the use of hydrogen as fuel for large-scale systems and transport. The 
emissions created by fuel-cell cars would only be water. However, the hydrogen must be produced 
with non-fossil, non-greenhouse gas energy to be sustainable.
Industrial ecology
is where industries develop synergistic relations with other industries by, for 
example, using the by-products from another industry. Industries can share utility infrastructure 
for energy production, water and wastewater treatment. 
Intensification
is used in different ways. Intensification refers here to urban infill that increases the 
diversity of land uses as opposed to ‘densification’ which increases residential population density in 
urban areas but not necessarily a variety of land uses.
