There can indeed be health risks with most materials. This is another reason that design is always 
case specific. Radon, for example, can be found in earth construction as well as in concrete. It is a 
colourless, odourless gas produced by the radioactive decay of the element radium. It can be found 
anywhere because it becomes dissolved in water. But although radon must be considered in using 
earth walls or concrete basements in some regions, its emissions can be reduced through simple 
design strategies.

Similarly, earth that is suitable for pressed earth walls construction can be found 
in most places.

However, care must be taken to ensure the soil has not been contaminated with 
toxic waste, sheep dip, asbestos or other toxins from prior human activities. Bio-based materials can 
also have problems.

Many particleboards are still bound together with formaldehyde – even though 
safer, non-toxic compounds are now available (eg masonite or strawboard). Of course, agriculturally-
based fibre materials are only sustainable relative to mineral-based materials if they are derived from 
sustainable agricultural systems and processes.

Generally, though, organic or solar materials are better than 
mined ones for non-structural uses, from a life-cycle and health perspective. However, there has 
been relatively little investigation of the potential problems associated with, or benefits of, organic

proprietary. This bias will only change when we begin to count the waste embedded in conventional 
industrial systems and/or the public costs of existing systems of development – rather than seeing
