Some people claim that public transport should be free of charge and others 
disagree. Discuss both views and give your opinion. 
 
It is a debatable issue whether public transport should be costless or transport authorities 
should charge passengers to use this service. While some people think that free 
transportation service will provide some relief to the passengers in this era of inflation, I 
strongly believe that exempting transport fares can lead to problematic situation to the 
service and the city.
On the one hand, people are in favor of making public transport free due to various 
reasons. First and foremost reason is that it will increase the accessibility of public 
transportation because everyone will be able to afford its use without worrying about the 
price due to the fact that there will be no charge of travelling in it. Moreover, it can 
alleviate the environmental problems as people become more willing to use charge less 
service and by doing so they will definitely lessen the usage of private vehicles and the cut 
in the number of cars in turn will reduce the congestion on roads and the quantity of 
exhaust emissions which would eventually prove to be helpful in combating global 
warming. Finally, the available non renewable resources are already scarce and more use 
of public transport will certainly reduce the overall consumption of oil and gas which can 
be a boon for the future generations. 
On the other hand, I believe that exemption of public transportation will lead to certain 
problems. Firstly subsidizing transport require enormous expenditure which may put 
pressure on the authorities as they have to handle so many other sectors too and this 
costless public transport will certainly aggravate the burden of transportation department 
manifold. Secondly, this patronage is essential for the effective and efficient maintenance 
of public transport system because 
if people get everything without paying anything they 
will not recognize the value of it and may use the facilities in a careless manner causing 
more problems to the government.
Finally, it will become hard for authorities to monitor 
the quality and have a proper check on the transportation system due to large number of 
passengers travelling and the congestion which it will be creating and it may lead towards 
its pathetic condition. 
In conclusion, although some individuals are in line with this short sighted approach of 
dispensing public transport free of charge, I think providing these services free of cost will 
definitely put a lot of burden on the nation’s economy.
