There are multiple competitive sport variations of sambo. Below are the main formats that are recognized by FIAS.
Sport Sambo (Russian: Борьбa Самбо, Bor'ba Sambo, Sambo Wrestling (eng)) is stylistically similar to old time Catch wrestling and Judo, but with some differences in rules, protocol, and uniform. More akin to Catch wrestling, and in contrast with judo, sambo allows various types of leg locks, while not allowing chokeholds. It also focuses on throwing, ground work and submissions, with very few restrictions on gripping and holds.
Combat Sambo (Russian: БоевоеСамбо, Boyevoye Sambo). Utilized and developed for the military, combat sambo resembles modern mixed martial arts, including extensive forms of striking and grappling. Combat sambo allows punches, kicks, elbows, knees, headbutts and groin strikes. Competitors wear jackets as in sport sambo, but also hand protection and sometimes shin and head protection. The first FIAS World Combat Sambo Championships were held in 2001. The World Combat Sambo Federation, based in Russia, also sanctions international combat sambo events.
Freestyle Sambo – Created and debuted by the American Sambo Association (ASA) in 2004. These rules differ from traditional sport sambo in that they allow choke holds and other submissions that are not permitted in sport sambo such as certain neck cranks and twisting foot locks. Freestyle sambo, like all sambo, focuses on throwing skills and fast ground work. No strikes are permitted in Freestyle Sambo. The ASA created this rule set in order to encourage non-sambo practitioners from judo and jujutsu to participate in sambo events.

Sambo appeared in Russia soon after the revolution. Originally it was used as a method of detention and rendering harmless of a criminal in KGB.In 1930 Sambo was included into the educational program of the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture. In 1932 grips of Sambo were included into the normative complex PO of the second degree.In 1930 V. Oschepkov began working in the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture. He was a great master of Japanese Judo, but teaching it he tried to apply it to the new reality and Soviet conditions. He replaced kimono and traditional pants by special fighting trousers and common sporting pants, he also introduced fighting boots with soft wefts. He began holding competitions of this new upgraded system, which was called then freestyle fight.Two schools of the new system worked independently of each other. They held competitions, discussed whose system is better etc. The first Moscow Championship of Sambo was held in 1935. Next year competitions took place in Leningrad, Kiev, Saratov, Hkarkov and other cities. In 1937 the first inter-city competitions among the teams of Moscow and Leningrad were organized. Next year live cities participated in such competitions: Moscow, Leningrad. Kiev, Saratov and Baku. Finally in 1938 representatives of the both schools gathered together and founded the Federation of freestyle combat. A. Rubanchik became its president, A. Harlampiev - the chief coach who was in charge of holding a meeting of coaches. Such meeting was held in spring of 1938, and On the 16th of November a decree about recognition of this kind of sport was signed. Next year the first national Championship was held 56 sportsmen took pan in it. In November I‘HO the second USSR Championship took place in Moscow.
