Chapter 9: Apply, Assess, and Adjust
Fig. 9.3:
The texture is applied to the flat surface (left). Once the surface is extruded, all of the sides
possess the texture.
Fig. 9.4:
Make sure solid colors are applied to all model surfaces.

Part 2: Textures
Fig. 9.5:
Do not use the default SketchUp option. Always apply colors to the model surfaces.
Fig. 9.6:
Apply a different solid color to represent every texture that will be in the model.

Chapter 9: Apply, Assess, and Adjust
You will want to swap out the solid color with a specific texture appropriate to that surface
(Fig. 9.7, Fig. 9.8). So while you do not need to apply the correct material, you should put some
consideration into coloring your model to prepare it for textures appropriate to the surfaces.
Fig. 9.7:
The solid colors are replaced with texture images from the Texture Library.

Part 2: Textures
It’s important to note that some surfaces will not require a texture image. A solid color will
work fine as long as IRP values are applied to the color. This is a subjective decision. Some met-
als render better with an image, others do not. Examples of such surfaces are metals, plastics
porcelains, windows, and similar smooth surfaces that are reflective, polished, or transparent.
In these instances, choose a solid color that best represents the color of the material.
Apply Colors to the Outside of Components and Groups
Objects and geometry that are bundled as components and groups have the unique ability to
have a color applied to the outside of the component or group instance. The surfaces inside a
component/group without a color (the default) will all take on the applied color, and you won’t
have to color apply all of them (Fig. 9.9, Fig. 9.10). Any surface already containing a color will
ignore the color application.
Fig. 9.9:
Most of the window, door, and chair component surfaces do not possess any color. Except for the window
glass, door glass, and chair arms, they are all painted with the SketchUp default material.
