General Clarity, Quality, and Character
Assess the texture and decide if it meets the needs and goals of the model and model context. 
Some textures might appear correct and accurate in the SketchUp model, but appear different 
and discontinuous when rendered. Frequently, it will be appropriate to swap out a texture for a 
different version based on these assessments. Swap out any textures that render poorly. 
Color/Contrast/hue Saturation 
The color, tones, contrast, and hues of a texture can be altered to provide a specific look. 
A texture might have the correct appearance but the wrong color. For example, gray-blue 
pavers can be altered to have a warm yellow-gray look (Fig. 9.19). Red corrugated metal can be 
adjusted to a green patina (Fig. 9.20). Polished, light-tan granite can be edited to dark granite 
(Fig. 9.21, Fig. 9.22).

In some instances, the material might be better with sharp contrasting edges or require 
a more muted variation across the surface. For example, mortar between bricks can be 
adjusted to possess greater contrast allowing for stronger delineation between the bricks 
and joints. A groundcover, carpet, fabric, paint, or metal might require muted textures. A 
texture might have a strong hue that can be toned down (Fig. 9.23). The variations are end-
less. The point is that the original texture colors and tones can be adjusted to suit the needs 
of the render. 
The Paint Bucket Edit menu can be used to adjust the hue, saturations, and colors of tex-
tures. Use the HLS (HSB on a Mac) or RGB color Picker functions to make these adjustments. 
Remember that using the SketchUp Paint Bucket produces limited results and that an external 
photo-editing program linked to SketchUp is the ideal approach for adjusting color, contrast, 
and hue on textures (see Chapter 10).
