facilitating a suitable workplace (Resp. 1). If an organization gives more opportunities to interact
informal, there will be better cross-departmental relationships as well. Furthermore, organizations
are more often structured around projects rather than on a siloed or departmental basis (Resp. 15).
A potential different way of informal (cultural) department forming will most likely not lead to a
different type formal (structural) department forming (e.g. organizational charts) within
organizations (Resp. 6; Resp. 10), because this is imposed on higher hierarchical levels (Resp. 3; Resp.
14). Resp. 12 is the only respondent that thinks a different way of informal department forming can
eventually lead to a different type of formal department forming.
Within the business environment, a potential increase in informal behavior can potentially lead to
other types of informal (cultural) department forming. However, when entering an open space
planning, people with work dependencies or common interests will most likely cluster together,
leaving existing departments sort of intact. Departments more and more often get formed around
projects, in which departments become expert suppliers, giving organizations characteristics of a
matrix organization. A potential increase in informal behavior or different type of informal (cultural)
department forming will probably not lead to different types of formal (structural) department
forming, since this usually is decided from higher hierarchical echelons.
Academic environment
Informal behavior
The increase of informal behavior due to more open space planning within the academic
environment will most likely be the same as within the business environment (Resp. 5; Resp. 8; Resp.
10; Resp. 11; Resp. 12; Resp. 16). Resp. 6 believes that informal behaviors for academics with a
permanent contract will not increase, since they already apply NWW. AIOs can notice a difference,
since they work more frequently in open plan offices than in privately owned closed offices. They
also have lower salaries and less facilities at home, making them come to the workplace more often
than senior academics. Permanent workers would flee from such an open environment and no
longer come to the office (Resp. 6).
Most respondents have reported that informal behavior will also increase within the academic
environment. There thus seems to be little difference between the business and academic
environment on this matter. However, it is also mentioned that permanent (senior) academics would
flee from an open environment. This can be an issue when implementing NWW in an academic
environment, since this can have impact on the organizational binding.
