send back
Back
means return as nearly always.
I am at a restaurant with my favourite person. She looks at what the
waiter has brought and says to me, 'That's not what I ordered.' 'Fine,' I
say. 'Let's send it back.' And back to the kitchen it goes.
Separable two-word verb
Be careful.
send down
Literally, you send somebody
down
from a high place to a lower one.
There are two common uses that I know, where 'high' and 'low' have a
social meaning, not a physical one.
Students at Oxford or Cambridge - the two most prestigious universities in
Britain - could be sent down if they were no good. They were expelled,
ejected, kicked out, asked to leave.
Also,
'What happened to Harry?'
'Sent down for ten years.'
He will be in prison for ten years.
Usually passive. TO BE SENT DOWN.
send up
On television there is a programme* of plastic puppets that send up the
politicians of the country. The programme is much more popular than the
politicians themselves.
*'programme' is British English. The Americans write 'program'.
Before the Wright brothers it was very difficult to send up anything. You
could only send up a balloon, which is a ridiculous, inflated, pompous
thing. In fact, even the thought of it was so difficult that it was ridiculous.
And that is the idea that has continued with us.
To send somebody up is to imitate them in a ridiculous, funny, or sarcastic

way.
Separable two-word verb
. Be careful.
set
(set, set, set)
First, you have to have some idea what set means. It means,
approximately, moving or changing something in such a way that it is
difficult to move or change it back. It is something that is difficult to undo.
When lovely wet, sticky concrete is left, it dries and becomes hard, and
no amount of water will turn hard concrete soft. The concrete sets.
Old Harry is set in his ways. He doesn't want to learn anything any more.
He says, 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks.'
When you change your clocks at the beginning or the end of summer, you
set your clocks. You set them
forward
in the spring, and in the autumn you
set them
back
.
