run out, run out of
Sugar runs out of the bag. Water runs out of the jug. And beer runs out of
the barrel.
When they are all empty, the sugar, the water, and the beer have run
out
.
By extension, we have run out of sugar, water, and beer. There is none
left.
Desmond the Politician lies all the time, so nobody believes him any
more. He's run out of credibility.
RUN OUT is a
two-word verb without an object
No problem.
RUN OUT OF is a
three-word verb
. No problem either.
run over
This is violent. When you run over someone, you do it with your car. This,
of course, can be fatal. Once I heard a child scream, 'I'll get my Dad to
run over your head.'
Separable two-word verb
Be careful.
run through
To run through something you must be inside it and trying to get outside to
the far side. Trains go
through
a tunnel, and planes fly through the air.
If you have a lot of work, don't you feel as if you are inside it?
This is very similar to
get through
and
go through
but without the sense of
struggle.
Today, I got through a lot of work. (So I'm tired.)
Today, I went through a lot of work. (So I'm happy.)
Today, I ran through a lot of work. (Easy. Do want me to do more?)

No problem.

Running through
a lot of work is easy. So, unfortunately for lots of us, is

up
a big bill. Invite all the pretty ladies to bottles of champagne.
No problem, just put it on the bill.
