it just means away from here.When you lay something off,
you lay it to one side. You stop using it.
Owners normally
lay off
employees because the business is failing, or
because the management has decided to close a factory or an office.
When this happens, the capital equipment of the factory, the factory itself,
is sold off.

sell out
SOLD OUT means that there is nothing left. You go to buy a couple of
tickets for the new Holly Wood film, but they have sold out. So you have
to do something else that night.
Compare this with
run out
.
When we say somebody has sold out, it also means that there is nothing
left. That is to say, that he has sold his trust, his integrity, his honour, out
for money or for fame. In other words, he has been corrupted.

By extension, to sell somebody out is to betray them. Think of Judas and
the thirty pieces of silver.

Very often

has the sense of 'complete' or 'finish' so when you sell up,
you sell everything you have into cash and start again, often in a new
