LESSON PLAN - POPULAR CULTURE

Course title: Og’zaki nutq ko’nikmalari (speaking skills)

Topic: Popular culture

Level: Pre-intermediate to intermediate



Lesson aims:



  • For students to explore themes of cultural diversity through a study of popular songs lyrics.

  • Students explore themes of cultural diversity through the lyrics of popular songs.

Preparation


  • Copies of the activity sheet

  • If desired, copies of the complete lyrics (obtainable from the Internet)

  • If possible, recordings of the songs.

Activity

Procedure

Warm-up
(15 min)

The activity can be done as either a whole or small group exercise, simply going through the song excerpts and answering the questions on the sheet.

Task 1.
(15 min)

Alternatively, the complete lyrics of each song (with recordings if possible) could be studied by students in four groups (each with a different song).

Task 2.
(20 min)

Each group could then present their song and their opinions to the whole class.

Task 3.
(15 min)

I Am Australian performed by The Seekers, from the album Night of Nights Live, about appreciating diversity and unity in Australia

Task 4.
(10 min)

Answers the Questions

Homework.
(5 min)

Writing task. Describing character is an essential part of creative writing, so students should write a description of their groupmate they don’t know well.

Extension activities

Either individually or in pairs/small groups, students could select and study a song which relates to cultural diversity, and present it to the whole group.

Task 2.

Task 3.
