Krashen’s Theory of Second Language Acquisition

that develops from meaningful input, while learning is a conscious process of discovering the rules of

effective than teaching using grammar and translation methods. A learning activity “focuses on how the 
message is given rather than the message itself” (Ray & Seely, 2003, p. 118). It is expected that through 
acquiring the language students will get the feeling of the language where phrases or sentences just 
sound right. It can be concluded that the young age of children is more preferable for second language 
acquisition since the teaching of children is not focused on explicit grammar rules and translation.
Another acquisition-learning hypothesis is Affective Filter Hypothesis which claims that the learner’s 
emotional state can act as a filter that impedes acquisition (Krashen & Terrell, 1983). This is one of the 
essential hypotheses for early start of language learning. According to the State Curriculum "Ilk Qadam'' for 
preschool educational institutions, the main teaching approach in preschool organizations is playing games 
including teaching L2. Since the learning process and lessons are organized through games, it lowers 
the affective filter and makes the emotional condition of a child very friendly for language acquisition. 
At these lessons children are active learners who are not afraid of making mistakes which is crucial for 
building fluency in L2. So, the learning environment at preschool perfectly fits such goals of L2 learning as 
developing interest and motivation for L2 study and building fluency in L2.
