Importance of the brake pedal simulator applications.
Today’s advances in computer technologies and a higher implementation of simulation tools in
engineering, the use of driving simulators has a particular role in the study of the automotive components.
Speaking about the advantages of brake pedal simulators, we should mention several advantages
that make them useful:
Controllability, reproducibility and standardization.
The simulators based on electric drives
prove themselves reliable from control point of view. Moreover, such systems possess good
reproducibility.
Ease of data collection.
An obvious advantage can be that the performance in the simulator can
be measured quite accurately. On the other hand, it can be complicated to make proper measurements in
rear vehicles.
Possibility of integrating the brake simulator to the overall driving simulator.
Brake pedal
simulator can be used as an important part in the driving simulator. It provides a very good understanding
of vehicle behavior during driving and deceleration because the simulator is equipped with haptic
feedback which emulates the feedback of a real brake pedal;
Implementation in Brake-By-Wire systems.
Brake-By-Wire system is a relatively new tendency
in braking systems. The concept of the technology claims that some of the conventional hydraulic
components of the braking systems are replaced with electronic control systems. This technology is
widely used in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Battery Electric Vehicles which exploit the idea of
regenerative braking.
Testing.
Being a part of driving simulator, the brake pedal feedback simulator can be used to
test the braking system for safety and comfort. The current advanced car simulator allows to obtain quite
a realistic feedback from driving. Besides, the vehicle dynamics performance can be analyzed[4].
However, in spite of the listed advantages, there exist some disadvantages that impose certain
limitations in the use:
Limited physical, perceptual and behavioral fidelity
. Despite the feedback that can be provided
by the simulators, there are still a lot of challenges to improve the haptic perception received by the driver
from the simulators.
Shortage of research demonstrating validity of simulation
. Before making sure the simulator
provides an adequate feedback, it has to be compared to the real data obtained from vehicle dynamics
experiments in order to check for validity. Sometimes it can be quite time-consuming and costly to
conduct a proper real vehicle dynamics experiment[1].
