INTRODUCTION
As the famous linguist Michael Halliday once wrote, "A language is essentially a collection of fixed or formulaic expressions, each of which has a specific meaning, and which can be manipulated and combined to produce an infinite variety of more complex expressions." These fixed or formulaic expressions are what we refer to as phraseological units, and they are a crucial component of language, playing a key role in communication.
In this paper, we will explore the linguistic and pragmatic aspects of phraseological units, as they are used in language and communication. Phraseological units are important in both linguistics and pragmatics as they are essential components of language structures and communicative strategies.
As Profs. Petr Sgall, Eva Hajičová, and Jarmila Panevová explain, "Phraseology...is a vital area of linguistic research that explores the multi-word expressions that shape the way we communicate." Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the essential features of phraseological units from a linguistic and pragmatic perspective.
We will begin by exploring the linguistic aspects of phraseological units, such as their classification, morphological structure, syntactic patterns, and semantic properties. Classification is a crucial aspect of phraseological units, as it allows us to group similar expressions based on their grammatical and semantic properties. Morphology and syntax, on the other hand, play an important role in the formation and use of phraseological units, as they govern the way that these expressions are constructed and used in sentences.
In terms of semantics, phraseological units have been studied for their meaning and the way that their meanings differ from the meanings of their individual words. Phraseological units can have both literal and figurative meanings, and the figurative meanings are often derived from the literal meanings of the individual words. For example, the phrase "kick the bucket" is a well-known idiom that means "to die," but the meaning is not derived from the literal meanings of the words "kick" and "bucket."
Next, we will delve into the pragmatic functions of phraseological units, such as how they can be used to convey a variety of communicative functions, including expressing emotions, persuasion, euphemism, irony, and humor. Pragmatics is concerned with the study of how language is used in context, and phraseological units are an important part of this context.
Expressions such as idioms, proverbs, and fixed expressions are used to convey a range of communicative functions, and the study of their pragmatic functions can help us to understand the role that they play in communication. For example, idioms can be used to express emotions such as anger or frustration, while proverbs can be used to provide advice or guidance.
This paper will also examine the use of phraseological units in discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, as well as their implications for pedagogy, particularly in the context of second language acquisition. Discourse analysis and corpus linguistics are important tools for the study of phraseological units, as they allow us to examine how these expressions are used in context and how they vary across different genres and contexts.
In terms of pedagogy, the study of phraseological units is important for second language acquisition, as these expressions are often learned through exposure to language and not through direct instruction. We will explore different approaches to teaching phraseological units, including task-based approaches and corpus-based teaching, and evaluate their effectiveness in helping students acquire these expressions.
Ultimately, this paper seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the linguistic and pragmatic aspects of phraseological units, and to demonstrate the crucial role that they play in language and communication. The study of phraseological units is a rich and multifaceted area of research that has important implications for language teaching, language processing.
