CHAPTER II PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS
2.1 Use of phraseological units in pedagogical activities and tasks
Teaching phraseological units is an important aspect of language education, and educators need to have a variety of approaches and methods at their disposal. There are different approaches to teaching phraseological units, including corpus-based instruction, input-based learning, and explicit instruction.
Corpus-based instruction involves using a corpus of authentic language to teach phraseological units. This method emphasizes the importance of exposure to authentic language use and context. As Cook notes, "corpus-based instruction can provide learners with access to the 'real' language, that is, the language as it is used in context, rather than the sanitized, decontextualized language that is often found in textbooks."47
Input-based learning is a method of teaching phraseological units that emphasizes the importance of input, or exposure to language, in language acquisition. This approach is based on the idea that learners acquire language by being exposed to meaningful input in context. As Johansson notes, "input-based learning emphasizes the importance of exposure to large amounts of language in use, with the goal of developing a 'feel' for the language and an intuitive understanding of how it works."48
Explicit instruction involves directly teaching phraseological units to learners through explanations, examples, and exercises. This approach is based on the idea that learners need explicit knowledge of the language in order to use it effectively.
Each of these approaches has its own strengths and weaknesses, and the best approach for teaching phraseological units may vary depending on the learner's needs and goals. By using a combination of these approaches, educators can help learners to develop a deeper understanding of phraseological units and use them more effectively in their own language production.
Input-based activities are an important component of teaching phraseological units, as they provide learners with exposure to authentic and rich input in context. There are a variety of activities that can be used to help learners develop their understanding of phraseological units, including extensive reading, listening, and watching.
Extensive reading is a method of language learning that involves reading a large quantity of authentic texts. This method provides learners with exposure to a wide range of phraseological units in context. As Hu and Nation (2000) note, "Extensive reading provides learners with authentic and meaningful input, and it allows them to notice patterns and regularities in the language without conscious effort."
Listening is another important input-based activity for teaching phraseological units. By listening to authentic spoken language, learners can develop their understanding of phraseological units in context. As Schmitt (2010) notes, "Listening to authentic spoken language can help learners to develop their sensitivity to the natural use of phraseological units, and can also help them to develop their ability to use these units in their own speech."
Watching videos or films is another effective input-based activity for teaching phraseological units. By watching videos or films in the target language, learners can develop their understanding of phraseological units in context, as well as their ability to use these units in their own language production. As Vandergrift and Goh note, "Watching videos or films in the target language can help learners to develop their comprehension skills, as well as their ability to recognize and use phraseological units."
Incorporating input-based activities into language learning can help learners to develop a deeper understanding of phraseological units and use them more effectively in their own language production. By providing learners with exposure to authentic and rich input, educators can help learners to develop their language proficiency and communicative competence.
In addition to input-based activities, output-based activities are also important for teaching phraseological units. These activities encourage learners to produce and practice using phraseological units in context, which can help them to develop their communicative competence. There are a variety of output-based activities that can be used to teach phraseological units, including role-plays, debates, and presentations.
Role-plays are a common output-based activity that can be used to teach phraseological units. In a role-play, learners are given a scenario and asked to act out a conversation or situation, using phraseological units in context. Role-plays can be a useful way to encourage learners to use phraseological units in context, as they provide learners with a concrete situation in which to use the language.
Debates are another effective output-based activity for teaching phraseological units. In a debate, learners are divided into two teams and asked to argue for or against a particular topic, using phraseological units to support their arguments. Debates can help learners to develop their ability to use phraseological units in a persuasive and effective manner, as they are required to use the language to make a strong argument.
Presentations are another output-based activity that can be used to teach phraseological units. In a presentation, learners are asked to present a topic or issue to the class, using phraseological units to express their ideas and support their arguments. Presentations can be a useful way to encourage learners to use phraseological units in a structured and organized manner, as they are required to use the language to present information in a clear and effective way.
By incorporating output-based activities into language learning, educators can help learners to develop their ability to use phraseological units in context and communicate effectively. These activities provide learners with opportunities to practice using the language in a meaningful and engaging way, which can help them to develop their communicative competence and language proficiency.
