My Grammar and I (Or Should That Be 'Me'?): Old-School Ways to Sharpen Your English

Correlative conjunctions are used in conjunction with other conjunctions:
She owns not only a flat in town but also a country estate.
She plays not only hockey but also lacrosse.
Bob will grow up to be either sporty or clever.
Bob grew up to be neither sporty nor clever.
Bob’s brother is both sporty and clever.
I like both beer and lager.
Rule:  In  sentences  such  as  those,  decide  the  position  of  the  conjunction  by
checking  on  what  follows  it.  They  should  be  the  same  construction,  whether
noun,  noun  phrase,  adjective,  clause  or  whatever.  Consider  the  difference
between these sentences:
She owns not only a flat in town but also a country estate.
She not only owns a flat in town, she also rents a villa in Tuscany .
Not only does she own a flat in town, but her parents also have a country estate.
In each case, the words following also ‘balance’ the words following not  only  .

Compound  conjunctions  is  a  show-offy  name  for  conjunctions  made  up  of
several words, often ending with as or that :
I don’t mind family Christmases as long as I am allowed to come home on Boxing
Day.
We can go as soon as you finish dithering about what to wear.
He built a shed at the bottom of the garden so that he would have somewhere to
keep his ferrets.
