When  a  co-ordinating  conjunction  connects  two  independent  clauses

often accompanied by a comma: Shall we run through that again, or can it wait
until  tomorrow?  The  comma  performs  no  real  grammatical  function,  it  simply
suggests that you pause for breath. Which is a large part of a comma’s job – see

Subordinating conjunctions link a main clause and a subordinate clause :
I feel tired because I couldn’t sleep last night.
I feel tired although I slept well last night.
I hope that I have made enough pizza.
I wonder whether I have bought enough wine.
Swot’s Corner: Asyndeton is the joining together of two or more complete
sentences without the use of a co-ordinating conjunction – I came, I saw, I
conquered – whereas polysyndeton is the use of multiple conjunctions, usually
where they are not strictly necessary: His cap and gown and pen and ink .
