INTEREST RATES AND NET EXPORTS

As discussed in more detail in Chapter 19,

when interest rates rise in Canada (with the price level fixed), Canadian-dollar bank

deposits become more attractive relative to deposits denominated in foreign

currencies, thereby causing a rise in the value of dollar deposits relative to other cur-

rency deposits, that is, a rise in the exchange rate. The higher value of the dollar

resulting from the rise in interest rates makes domestic goods more expensive than

foreign goods, thereby causing a fall in net exports. The resulting negative relation-

ship between interest rates and net exports is shown in panel (b) of Figure 22-7. At
