The

M2

(gross) monetary aggregate includes currency outside banks, personal

deposits at chartered banks, and non-personal demand and notice deposits at

chartered banks. The currency component of M2 (gross) includes only paper

money and coins in the hands of the nonbank public and does not include cash

that is held in ATMs or bank vaults. Surprisingly, there is close to $1500 cash in the

hands of each person in Canada and more than US$2000 in the hands of each per-

son in the United States (see the FYI box, Where Are All the Dollars?).

The

M3

(gross) aggregate includes M2 (gross) plus chartered bank nonpersonal

term deposits and foreign currency deposits of Canadian residents. The nonpersonal

term deposits are held by provincial and municipal governments, corporations, and
