“ALIENS AMONG ALIENS”
GREEK COLONIES IN THE BARBARIAN ENVIROMENT
Ancient Greeks were the first nation that had (and already at an
early stage of its development as a civilization) to meet a
problem of a
full-scale contact with the Barbarian world (full-scale both from the
point of view of the width, spectrum and diversity of contact regions
and from the point of view of typological diversity of the Barbarians
Greek met with). It happened during the
Great Greek colonization of
the Archaic period. Greek colonists met wholly alien Barbarians, pre-
viously unknown to them. On the other hand, they themselves were
leaving for colonies exactly because they had become aliens for their
old motherland, brought out by it.
Keywords: Ancient Greece, Barbarians, Greco-Barbarian
contacts, the
Great Greek colonization.
