This matrix describes personality in terms of "active/passive" and "involvement/avoidance". Let's consider them in more detail.
There are two approaches to problem solving on the vertical axis: active and passive. Activity means an active approach to solving problems, showing initiative in social contacts. The passive approach is characterized by the expectation that others will solve the person's problems and initiate social contact.
The horizontal axis describes the personality in terms of interpersonal communication style. Engaged people like to be part of a group, they feel comfortable among many others. Avoiders, on the contrary, try to be alone, or in a company with a small number of participants.
When these criteria intersect, we get four groups to which a person can be assigned depending on his problem-solving style and interpersonal relationships:
1. "Active-Involved" : takes an active approach to problem solving. Socially proactive, easily joins large groups or creates new ones around him. Being alone feels uncomfortable. They say about such people “the soul of the company”.
2. "Active-Avoidant" : active in solving problems and establishing contacts, but prefers to build relationships with one or more people at the same time. Feels happy being alone.
3. "Passive-Avoidant" : tends to wait for others to solve his problems. Not ready to take the initiative in establishing contact with others, but will readily respond to manifestations of attention from them. Prefers to build relationships with one person, loves to be alone.
4. "Passive-Involved" : looking for someone to solve his problems. Passive in establishing social contacts, but likes to be part of a large group. As a rule, he is on the border of an established social group, then at some point he commits a provocative or unexpected act that interrupts communication with this group. His goal is to be reactively involved in the group while maintaining a passive stance.
All six adaptations identified by P. Ware can be located in the coordinates of the Evaluation Matrix, as shown in Figure 2.
