EDI Assessment

In the EDI system for import clearances, the assignment of the cargo to be assessed by the 
assessing officer is transferred to the assessing officer in the group through the system. 
•
Once assigned, the assessing officer processes the cargo declaration on the screen concerning 
all the parameters as given above for the manual process. However, in the 
EDI system
, the 
entire calculations are done automatically by the system itself. To cite an example of cases 
where there is an exemption notification, the system takes into account this factor &
calculates the appropriate duty. The system further applies even the rate of exchange 
prevailing and gives the duty payable for the said imports without any manual calculation or 
intervention.

Any clarification from the importer needed by the assessing officer needs is raised through as 
a query. This query is printed at the service centre, to which the party then responds.

On assessment, a copy of the assessed bill of entry is printed at the service centre. However, 
in the EDI system, documents are generally examined only at the time of examination of the 
goods. The Final bill of entry is then printed after an 'out of charge' is given by the Customs 
Officer. 
•
In the EDI system, there is a facility wherein the system completes the appraisal directly by 
itself. In this process, the declaration of the importer is taken as correct, and the system itself 
calculates duty payable by the importer. In all such cases, it eliminates the need for an 
assessing officer.

The facility of tele-enquiry is provided in certain major customs stations through which the 
status of documents filed in EDI systems can be ascertained through the telephone. If there 
are no queries raised, the same may be gets printed through fax in the office of 
importer/exporter/CHA.
