NORMALIZATION 

 

Another sociolinguistic classification of languages is considered in terms of the degree of 

their normalization. Most of the Germanic languages are characterized by  the clear codification, 

enshrined in the norm. These are English (with several variants of the norm), German (the same), 

Swedish  (in  two  variants),  Danish,  Icelandic,  Faroese,  Afrikaans,  Dutch  in  the  Netherlands, 

Frisian.  The  remaining  languages  and  variants  are  more  complicated.  The  normalizers  of  the 

Dutch  language  in  Belgium  advocate the preservation of  some  Flemish specificity, but they do 

not have a clear program, except for the desire to preserve the peculiarities of pronunciation and 

the  three-genus  system  of  the  noun.  There  is  no  single  clear  norm  for  Yiddish  in  its  various 

regional  variants:  for example, Yiddish  in  Russia  is different from Yiddish, for example, in the 

United States  in a  number of respects, primarily  in  vocabulary. The Norwegian  language  has a 

very special position: its main variant - Bokmål - after the so-called "changes in spelling and the 

norm for textbooks" in 1981 became so multivariate, acquired such a range of alternative norms 

that it even moved away from the similarity of the norm more than whenever earlier.
